    ARAGON

There exists a black kingdom which the eyes of man avoid because its landscape fails signally to flatter them. This darkness, which he imagines he can dispense with in describing the light, is error with its unknown characteristics. Error i…s certainty’s constant companion. Error is the corollary of evidence. And anything said about truth may equally well be said about error: the delusion will be no greater.~ Louis Aragon

    Louis Aragon

(born Oct. 3, 1897, Paris, Fr. — died Dec. 24, 1982, Paris) French poet, novelist, and essayist. He was introduced by André Breton into avant-garde circles, and the two cofounded the Surrealist review Littérature in 1919. From 1927 he was increasingly a political activist and spokesman for communism, which resulted in a break with the Surrealists. Among his works are the novel tetralogy Le Monde réel, 4 vol. (1933 – 44), describing the class struggle of the proletariat; the huge novel Les Communistes, 6 vol. (1949 – 51); novels of veiled autobiography; and volumes of poems expressing patriotism and love for his wife. He was editor of the communist weekly of arts and literature, Les Lettres françaises, 1953 – 72.

    L’amoureuse

    In English:
    The Beloved
She is standing on my eyelidsAnd her hair is wound in mine,She has the form of my hands,She has the colour of my eyes,She is swallowed by my shadowLike a stone against the sky.Her eyes are always openAnd will not let me sleep. Her dreams in broad daylightMake the suns evaporateMake me laugh, cry and laugh, Speak with nothing to say.

  • Former Doors Mark 40th Anniversary of Jim Morrison’s Death

    Jim Morrison July 2, 1971

Former members of The Doors have marked the 40th anniversary of Jim Morrison’s death in Paris.

On Sunday, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger lit candles at Morrison’s grave in the city’s Pere Lachaise cemetery.

Morrison, the band’s lead singer, died of heart failure in a bath in Paris on 2 July 1971. He was 27.

Hundreds of Morrison fans, some wearing T-shirts bearing the words 40th Anniversary, left flowers at the grave.

Some sang and others read poems to mark the day.

Morrison moved to Paris in 1971 to write.

He was found dead in the bath by his girlfriend, Pamela Courson. A doctor’s report stated the cause of death was heart failure aggravated by heavy drinking.

Morrison, the son of a US Navy admiral, was born in 1943 in Florida.

He formed The Doors with Manzarek in 1965 in Los Angeles

The band name was inspired by Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, about the author’s drug use.

  • Poe Lou Reed

Lou Reed been quite busy these days. When he’s not collaborating with Metallica on a record, he’s spending time putting together a graphic novel based around his “spiritual forefather” Edgar Allen Poe, called, appropriately, The Raven.

It’s not Reed’s first tangle with the author—in 2003, he released an album, also called The Raven, a Poe-themed project in which “Reed’s poetically streetwise sensibility merged with Poe’s dark chronicles of terror and despair.” Now Reed’s Poe-esque lyrics have been collected into a book and illustrated with paintings by New Yorker cartoonist Lorenzo Mattotti. And yes, the book looks just as creepy as you’d expect.

    Hell’s Wisdom
(read the original manuscript in the Baroness archives)

    <All wisdom is profoundly trivial>
    Love is gravitation

My “Derangement” dwells in absence – as – under circumstances existing – normally – it
    should be present.
    It maintains in circumstance –
    There I leave it.
My being in senses right is normal height.
It being uncommon – presents strange – as genius does – uncompanioned.
Victim of circumstance I am not – as I am no dweller in
For me – to be touched – touchably – by circumstance – normal
To vacuous spectres of substance past – should so be abnormal – as to cause revulsion

Provoking instant insanity – whence I am protected by radius of spiritual emanation

To circumstance I am immaterial – as is circumstance to me.
Diametricaly opposed – alone we leave each other – charmed aloft
Lone I – enhanced shrouded earth – by own atmosphere mine self’s own self – out-of
circumstance cosmic star – volve revolve – evolve -I do – by starshaped pride stygmatized
outcast from circumstanced press – presssure – I am.

  • scienceandstuff:  Interesting Theory…

    Shakes

Nerve: Anthropologist thinks Shakespeare may have been a pothead

To inhale or not to inhale, that is the question. South African anthropologist Francis Thackeray thinks he may have discovered the true source of William Shakespeare’s poetic genius — marijuana. Back in 2001, Thackeray found several clay pipes with evidence of pot and cocaine being linked to Shakespeare’s garden. But now he is so set on proving his theory that he’s seeking permission from the Church of England to exhume the Bard’s body so he can physically analyze him.

Shakespeare himself, however, doesn’t want to go anywhere, at least according to the inscription on his tombstone, which reads, “Blessed be the man that spares these stones/ And cursed be he that moves my bones.” Only time will tell if Thackeray will ever actually get access to Shakespeare’s remains. But if he does, we may finally learn just what that “noted weed” mentioned in Sonnet 76 is.
